Jarrah

Eucalyptus Marginata

Family: Myrtaccae – the Myrtles

Jarrah is also known as Swan River Mahogany.  The southwest of Western Australia is the only place in the world where jarrah grows naturally.  The trees normally grow up to forty metres in height.

It is a richly coloured and beautifully grained timber sought after for cabinetmaking and building.  The timber is termite and fire resistant.  The colour of the timber can vary from white through to almost black.

Before the era of bitumen roads, the streets of cities such as Berlin and London were paved with Jarrah blocks.  The streets of the City of Perth were also paved with jarrah blocks as were the floors of buildings.  The jarrah blocks can still be seen in the floor of the old GPO building in Perth.

This quality, hand-made product shows some of the beauty of jarrah.  It is finished using scented wood polish produced by Tinderbox of Balingup in the southwest of W.A.  The polish contains beeswax, linseed oil, plant turpentine and pure essential oils: rosewood, cedarwood, petitgrain, bergamont, benzoin, cloves and nutmeg.  This creates a natural glow to the timber.  The wax is non-toxic, nourishing and protective.

This product can be cared for and protected by periodically applying a coat of a beeswax based wax and buffing with a soft cloth.

Timber used by LES ROWE in the manufacture of gifts and furniture is sourced from the forest floor from wind fall logs or bushfire or recycled from mills, demolitions, flooring, jetties and the like.  Timber taken from the forest floor is done so under licence issued by the department of Conservation and Land Management.  We endeavour not to contribute to the further demise of our magnificent forest so that in our own small way we can contribute their preservation for future generations to enjoy.
